🎯 Coaching
There is a lot you can accomplish.
You won’t know the limits are you haven’t really tried.
In my coaching I help fellow neurofunky people grow.
Are you ready to give it a real go?
Why I’m coaching
Learning about my own neurodivergence (Autistic & ADHD) has been instrumental in improving how I handle life. My ambition is to use my own experience and expertise to help others be their best selves.
In my coaching several things align.
- 🧠 I am an autistic ADHD-er, who has discovered (and is discovering still) how to deal with being different from the norm.
- ❤️ Coaching and training watersport instructors/coaches has grown my love for helping people improve.
- 🎯 I’m obsessed with improvement, so much that I’ve made it my job.
Know yourself
A useful lens to look at improving is learning about your traits, skills, and environment.
- Traits: Your attributes, the way you are wired. These are the things you need to discover, and won’t be able to change.
- Skills: These are the things you can improve. Habit’s, routines, tactics, strategies, and mindset.
- Environment: The world around you. Your work, your house, your friends, etc.
Learning about how you are wired (the type and severity of your neurodivergence) is essential in distinguishing between traits and skills. If it’s not a trait this means it is a skill, and you can learn to improve dealing with it.
One of my own most important lessons was to realise that my ADHD brain couldn’t filter incoming information. Here I was trying to work harder to focus with a broken filter. This experience was like trying to scoop up water with a fishing net.
When I learned about how my filter was broken I shifted my efforts into what I could influence, which was managing my field of view. Improving how I positioned myself in rooms meant I could decrease the chance seeing something distracting.
In this way, I improved how my traits, skills and environment influence each other.
My 10-step program
I don’t have one. 🤷♂️
Ok, ok, that might be a bit of an oversimplification.
But I don’t have a set plan for coaching because: “You are all individuals!”
(Life of Brian reference 🤭)
I’ll explain.
- Learning always adds something to what you already knows or can do.
- Learning something you already know is pointless.
- Trying something that is way outside your current abilities is often demotivating.
- Ideally the thing to learn is slightly above your current ability, an achievable challenge.
Also, the fact that something works for me doesn’t mean it works for you. We’re going to have to figure out what does and doesn’t work for you, and adjust.
This means that to provide the challenge that is exactly right, I need to know exactly where you are. I feel I can only do this properly by making my coaching tailor made.
Common elements
Although I don’t have a 10-step program there are common elements to my coaching.
- We figure out where you are.
- We determine the most important goal or direction you want to go.
- We take small steps to improve, and repeat.
Mitigating overwhelm
It makes little sense focusing on anything when you’re struggling with overwhelme. If this an issue for you than this becomes our first and only priority for as long as it needs to be.
Improving Every Day doesn’t mean that you’ll always be actively pursuing some shiny new goal. Sometimes it means getting enough sleep, rest and relaxation.
And sometimes often it means taking enough breaks and walks purposefully doing nothing.
It might mean learning to be content with what you have, which can be a lot harder than achieving that next thing you thought was going to make you happy.
Mindset
I believe that to improve it is important to have the right mindset.
- Growth Mindset – Seeing failure as an opportunity to learn. Believing success is determined by effort and strategy rather than talent.
- Taking Ownership – All of your excuses are lies. Blame is irrelevant, it’s about what you can do.
- Mindfulness – You are not your emotions. Identifying with emotions (“I am angry”) leads to unhealthy coping. However, learning to spot your emotions (“I am experiencing anger”) you’ll be better able to deal with them. To quote Viktor Frankl: “Between stimulus and response lies a space. In that space lie our freedom and power to choose a response. In our response lies our growth and our happiness”
Habits, Process, and experimentation
What I do believe is essential is to discover and implement useful habits and processes. Doing so will give you standard operating procedures for dealing with everything life throws at you.
To find out what works for you we are going to need to do some experiments. You’re going to have to try new things.
Don’t worry, the only way to truely fail an experiment is not learning from it.
Accountability
Using accountability (either me or people in your environment) can be a huge motivator in sticking to your ambitions. This can be in the form of body doubling or regular check-ins.
What I won’t help you with
- Trauma – I’m not a therapist, so I don’t feel qualified in helping you overcome trauma.
- Burnout – Although I think I can help prevent you burning out, I don’t feel qualified in helping you when you are in burnout.
- Diagnosis – I might give you my view on what I think is likely (regarding ADHD/Autism) but I’m not a psychologist or psychiatrist.
So, eehm, how much 💶?
Coaching, like mine, costs between €300,- and €600,- per month elsewhere.
I however prefer to operate with Pay what it is worth, to you. This means that at the end of the month you can determine what it was worth, and I will bill you accordingly.
As your financial situation has a huge impact on what is affordable I think it is fair that you take this into account.
I’m not working for free though. It has to be reasonable for both sides.
If you’re not comfortable picking a number we will figure something out.
Sounds reasonable… now what?
